Ilkay Gundogan, the new Barcelona midfielder, confirmed that his decision to join the Spanish Football League champion was easy because of his expected role as a mentor to the young men in the team’s midfield.

The 32-year-old Germany international was introduced to the media at Barcelona’s stadium on Monday after joining on a two-year contract on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City.

He led Gundogan City to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League treble last season, ending his successful seven-year spell in England with 12 major titles.

The former Borussia Dortmund player spoke about his great experience that he could offer to the team when asked about the young players in Barcelona, as he told a press conference: They are wonderful, Gavi, Pedri and Frenkie de Young… I came with great experience because I faced difficulties in my life and my career, and I believe that my experience will help a lot.

And I follow: They are very talented players, and they play better than me, and if I can benefit them by at least one percent, I will be happy. I am ready for the challenge even though I am older, and I still have a lot to offer.

Gundogan expects to adapt to the Spanish League under the leadership of coach Xavi Hernandez after working with Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City coach who previously trained Barcelona.

The German player added: Guardiola and Xavi are very similar. I felt a bond with Chappie from the first moment we spoke. When I spoke to him, I knew Barcelona was on the right track.

He concluded: It is a great team and an opportunity for me to play in a different league and in a different country. We will do our best to win the Champions League. Wearing this jersey is a responsibility and I will try to do my best to win as many trophies as possible.
