MEXICO CITY (AP) — Gunmen on motorcycles shot and killed five men Saturday outside the Mexican city of Puebla in an apparent dispute over stolen fuel, according to authorities.

The five victims appeared to be protecting two fuel trucks when the attack occurred, according to Puebla police.

The department said the incident was likely related to fuel theft.

Two of the victims had been arrested in October for alleged involvement in the explosion of a fuel truck, although they did not provide details regarding their role in that case.

Puebla is located east of Mexico City and has long suffered from gangs who open illegal holes in government pipelines to steal fuel. Sometimes shootouts occur between gangs and authorities.
