As the 35th Muktamar of Nahdlatul Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) unfolds, a sharp pivot in election mechanics has ignited fierce debate over leadership integrity. H.M. Zahrul Azhar As’ad, widely known as Gus Hans, has issued a public appeal for the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) selection committee to choose the next General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) through pure conscience and complete independence, free from external coercion.
Shifting Mechanics and the High-Stakes Vote in Jombang
The debate follows a monumental procedural vote at the congress. Out of 552 total muktamirin delegates gathered, 401 voted in favor of altering the election mechanism to rely on voting, while 150 delegates fought to maintain the traditional system. One vote was rendered abstain or invalid. This decisive shift means roughly 73 percent of the assembly backed the new voting framework, leaving the remaining 27 percent tied to the old model.
Speaking from Jombang, Gus Hans—who serves as the Vice Rector of Universitas Pesantren Tinggi Darul Ulum (Unipdu)—emphasized that procedural changes demand an equally rigorous commitment to autonomy among the senior clerics appointed to the AHWA. According to statements reported by Antara, he urged members to look past political noise and examine the deep roots of organizational friction.
“I hope AHWA can truly choose without any intervention and use the conscience they possess,” Gus Hans stated, highlighting the immense weight resting on the shoulders of the committee members.
Navigating Past Grievances and the Reality of Last-Minute Lobbying
The internal politics of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization are rarely straightforward. Gus Hans noted that the AHWA must evaluate candidates with absolute clarity, sorting out who has historically fueled institutional conflict versus who possesses the diplomatic capital to heal fractured relationships. The goal, he argues, is to purge the organization of lingering residues from prior disputes so the incoming leadership can govern with a clean slate.
Despite swirling rumors and intense corridor politics, no single contender has locked down an unassailable lead. No one can claim who is the strongest. Everything depends on last-minute communication with the clerics in AHWA,” Gus Hans explained.
The Shadow of Campaign Engineering and Allegations of Manipulation
Yet, the introduction of a voting-heavy framework has done little to quell anxieties regarding backdoor maneuvering, potential intimidation, or financial influence. Gus Hans addressed these concerns directly, acknowledging that while illicit pressures remain in the realm of unproven allegations, the structural shift itself could very well be the product of deliberate orchestration.
“With this system change, it could also be the result of non-free conditioning by parties who consider themselves to have the potential to win by using this system,” he cautioned. However, he stopped short of labeling the maneuvers as outright manipulation, preferring to characterize the shifting dynamics as a calculated form of organizational engineering designed to favor specific factions.
