They took it all away. Guyana athletes have proven, once again, that they are efficient. This time it was up to the boxing practitioners to excel. On the occasion of an interregional competition organized by the Centre-Val de Loire, a delegation of Guyanese boxers went to France on May 19 2022. The team won two tournaments: the first leg on Saturday May 21 and the return on Wednesday May 25 in Orléans.

Among the nine members of the delegation, there are seven boxers. Two are girls, five are boys, then there are the two supervisors. Athletes belong to the minimal, junior, cadet, senior, novice or even elite categories. These lightweights or featherweights were chosen to participate in these meetings in relation to their evolution since their arrival in this sportbut also according to their attendance and performance in combat.

At the end of the first tournament, out of five Guyanese boxers engaged, the delegation obtained three victories, a draw and a defeat. The second time, all the boxers participated. They have won six out of seven fights. The team was thus the most victorious of the two tournaments. For Nicolas Elie, technical adviser and coach of the English boxing team of Guyana, it is a source of pride… especially since their preparation time has been reduced due to Covid-19.

Young people have seen that hard work has paid off. In addition, compared to the Covid, the preparation was difficult. For this kind of competition, it takes two months of preparation. We had about a month. In English boxing, we had not yet had permission to resume, unlike other sports because at home, there is a lot of contact.

The English boxing delegation from Guyana will be back home this Tuesday, May 31. “The next step will be to get back to work“, says Nicolas Elie. And to continue: “Next competition: a gala, June 18, in Saint-Laurent du Maroni. All this to prepare for the Caribbean championship which should normally be held in December 2022“. In a few days, the young boxers of the delegation will return with stars in their eyes.

I’m very happy for the youngsters, since it’s a great experience they had there. You should know that since Jacques Chinon, in 40 years of boxing in Guyana, this is the first time that a committee from France (here that of the Centre-Val de Loire, Ed.) has invited us. Today, we are with world champion Michel Mothmora, who prepared for the youngsters. They can discuss with him, it’s very enriching.
