Gyeongsan Arson Suspect Dies, Raising Death Toll to 5

The death toll from a devastating management office arson attack in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province, has risen to five after the 71-year-old suspect died in a hospital 28 days following the incident.

What began as a localized dispute over apartment management escalated into a major tragedy late last month when an 70-something resident unleashed flammable liquid inside the community’s administrative center. The subsequent fire and explosion injured eight individuals and ultimately claimed the lives of four residents and staff members before the suspect himself succumbed to severe burns nearly a month later.

The Fatal Fire at the Sadong Apartment Complex

The incident unfolded on the morning of June 23 at an apartment complex in Sadong, Gyeongsan. According to police investigations, the suspect, identified by his surname Ryu, got into a heated verbal altercation with management office personnel. Police reports indicate that Ryu walked down to the building’s basement storage area, transferred roughly 4 liters of thinner into a tin can, and returned to the management office floor to ignite the flammable material using a lighter.

While firefighters extinguished the blaze within roughly 20 minutes of the initial report, the enclosed explosion caused catastrophic injuries. Eight people inside the office—including Ryu himself, residents, and management staff—suffered severe burns and were rushed to regional hospitals. The physical toll began mounting immediately. A 50-year-old female resident died the very next day, followed on July 31 by a 50-year-old resident representative and a female clerk from the management office. On August 11, another 50-year-old woman who served on the apartment’s resident committee passed away while undergoing medical treatment in Daegu.

Motive and Years of Administrative Conflict

Investigators examining the background of the attack found a deeply rooted history of friction between Ryu and the building’s administrators. Local reports note that Ryu had spent years locked in disputes with the resident representative council and the management office over the execution and operation of apartment management fees. The tension had peaked just a day before the attack, when police were called to the complex after Ryu caused a disturbance in the same office.

Police pursued lines of inquiry pointing toward a targeted, premeditated revenge crime stemming from accumulated grievances over building governance. Although authorities managed to interview four surviving victims who were well enough to provide testimony, investigators were never able to conduct a formal face-to-face interrogation of Ryu. The suspect remained hospitalized under intensive care in a Daegu burn specialty unit for his extensive full-body injuries until his death on the afternoon of August 20.

Case Closure and Legal Implications

Ryu’s death at approximately 5:00 p.m. on August 20 shifts the legal status of the investigation. The suspect had previously been under police investigation on charges of arson resulting in death and injury to a building housing human habitation. Because Korean criminal law mandates that prosecution ends with the death of a suspect, law enforcement officials announced plans to conclude the case as lacking rights to prosecution.

While police intend to wrap up and document the gathered evidence regarding the suspect’s movements and the exact timeline of the tragedy, the legal system will hold no further criminal proceedings. The official conclusion leaves the community without a trial verdict, permanently sealing the formal judicial accounting of how a financial and administrative dispute turned into one of the region’s deadliest localized conflicts.
