Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has arrived in Ukraine for political talks. The Green politician arrived in the capital Kiev on Monday morning with a small delegation of German business representatives.

Among other things, Habeck wants to relaunch the German-Ukrainian energy partnership. This was announced by the Greens politician after visiting one of the substations of the energy company “Ukrenergo”, which supplies one of the most densely populated areas of Ukraine with energy.

This is also an “invitation to decarbonize”, i.e. to say goodbye to fossil fuels. “In this respect, two things fit together quite well: the need for security and a sustainable energy system.” Ukraine could become an energy exporter to Europe.

Germany and Ukraine have had a formal energy partnership since 2020, which is intended to help drive the shift towards more climate-friendly forms of energy production. Among other things, it is about increasing energy efficiency, modernizing the electricity sector, expanding renewable energies and reducing greenhouse gases.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the focus has been on emergency aid to repair and maintain the power grid – Russian attacks are also aimed at the country’s infrastructure. According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, this aspect is now to be further strengthened. It is also about the medium and long-term reconstruction of the Ukrainian energy system in order to make it safer and climate-neutral.

While Ukrainian and Russian soldiers – especially in eastern Ukraine – continue to fight each other, reconstruction is already starting elsewhere – even without outside help.

The President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), Siegfried Russwurm, who is accompanying Habeck as one of several business representatives, described the trip as a “signal to the Ukrainians that the German economy also stands by them”.

Habeck was last in May 2021 as Green Party chairman in Ukraine – a trip of which he “still has very strong memories”, as he said. During a visit to what was then the front line in eastern Ukraine, Habeck, as an opposition politician, spoke out in favor of the delivery of “defensive weapons” to the country attacked by Russia.

At this point, the initiative caused dismay in his own party, and the federal government, which was still led by the grand coalition, rejected the demand.
