Two people have been killed in an attack by two armed men in Israel. The police shot the two perpetrators and spoke of a terrorist act. The incident overshadowed a historic meeting of foreign ministers.

Two gunmen shot dead two people and injured at least four others in the Israeli city of Hadera before being killed by police officers. This was announced by the Israeli police and rescue workers. The Mada rescue service confirmed the deaths of a man and a woman, two of the four injured people were seriously wounded.

Authorities speak of “terrorism”

Police and emergency services spoke of a “terrorist attack”. “Two terrorists opened fire on police officers, killing two bystanders,” the police said. Special forces would have killed the two attackers. According to local police representative Dudu Boani, the Israeli secret service had identified the two attackers as supporters of the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS). The terrorist militia has now claimed responsibility for the attack. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett went to the scene.

Security camera footage appeared to show two men firing until they were hit by police bullets. Such incidents are common in Israel and the Autonomous Territories. Just days ago, an Arab knife attacker killed four people in southern Israel.

Attack overshadows historic meeting

Today’s attack comes amid a key foreign ministers’ meeting in Israel designed to cement the normalization of relations between Israel and several Arab countries. At the invitation of Israeli Foreign Minister Jair Lapid, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco are taking part in the meeting in Israel, which lasts until Monday.
