Haitians are the first asylum seekers in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Haitians were the main asylum seekers in Mexico in 2022, and nearly 19,000 people have requested refuge in the country so far this year, more than in all of last year.

This is indicated by the data disclosed on Tuesday by the Mexican Commission for Refugee Aid for the first four months of the year.

The flow of Haitians through Mexico has not stopped in recent years because the growing instability and violence in their country were compounded by the economic problems caused by the pandemic.

More than 50,000 Haitians requested refuge in Mexico, an unprecedented number that put the citizens of that country above Central Americans or migrants of any other nationality.

In 2021, thousands of Haitians settled in a remote corner of the border between Mexico and the United States and set up a huge camp that put the immigration authorities of both countries in check.
