Hamburg commuters are facing significant disruptions as the A7 highway is closed until Monday morning at 5 a.m. For construction work. Though, the situation is set to worsen as a warning strike by the ver.di union is planned to continue at the Elbtunnel, further complicating traffic conditions.
The A7 has been closed since Friday evening in both directions: towards Flensburg between Hamburg-Heimfeld and Volkspark, and towards Hannover between Hamburg-Stellingen and Heimfeld. While traffic is expected to resume Monday, the strike will target employees in tunnel control centers, likely causing additional delays.
Due to the strike, only two of the usual three lanes will be open at the Elbtunnel, which affects not only that route but also nearby noise protection tunnels in Schnelsen and Stellingen. Heavy traffic is anticipated, particularly for freight vehicles at the Norderelbbrücke, where no heavy transports are expected to operate, likely leading to substantial congestion.
Union Justifies Timing of the Strike
Max Stempel, a union secretary for ver.di, defended the timing of the strike, stating that it coincides with the planning of national wage negotiations. He emphasized that strikes are a last resort and occur only when negotiations have not yielded results. Despite two rounds of talks, the Autobahn GmbH has not made any progress, forcing the union to take action.
Upcoming Negotiations
The Autobahn GmbH remains hopeful for a balanced outcome in the upcoming third round of negotiations scheduled for Wednesday in Berlin. The union is demanding a 7% wage increase, with a minimum of €300 per month. As discussions continue, both sides are under pressure to reach an agreement that could alleviate the ongoing disruptions.
Traffic Management During the Construction
As the A7 remains closed, authorities advise drivers to avoid the area and consider using public transportation. A comprehensive detour has been established via the A1, A21, and B205 for through traffic. Local detours will also direct drivers over the Elbbrücken, with significant restrictions on the Bundesstraße 75 due to ongoing construction.
Future Road Closures
This A7 closure is part of a larger plan to expand the highway to eight lanes and enhance noise protection measures, including a new two-kilometer noise protection tunnel expected to be completed by 2028. Future closures are already scheduled, including a further 55-hour shutdown later this March for additional construction work.
For those planning to travel in the area, it is essential to stay informed on traffic updates and potential delays. The ver.di strike highlights the ongoing labor disputes affecting infrastructure services, which may have further implications for commuters.
As negotiations resume this week, both sides will be under scrutiny to resolve their differences swiftly. Drivers and public transit users are encouraged to share their experiences and stay adaptable during this challenging time.
