Urwerk has released the UR-100V Lightspeed Ceramic, a 43mm avant-garde timepiece crafted from an unbreakable white composite ceramic.
When founders Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner launched the UR-100 SpaceTime in 2019, the watchmaking world gained an approachable yet profoundly eccentric entry point into independent horology. The collection traded traditional hands for a signature wandering-hour satellite display packed into a wearable case. Over the years, the platform expanded into gold, titanium, carbon, and bronze. Yet the newest iterations take a dramatic philosophical turn. Rather than measuring Earth’s rotation through space, the latest models turn their attention outward to the wider solar system.
The Composite Ceramic Case and Its Stratified Aesthetic
The architecture of the watch rests on a proprietary white ceramic composite engineered specifically for Urwerk. By integrating reinforcing layers of silver-colored fiberglass and carbon inserts into the material, the manufacturer achieved a case that retains traditional ceramic scratch resistance while dramatically improving its impact durability. The case measures 43mm in width, 51.73mm in length, and 14.55mm in thickness, creating a commanding presence on the wrist that remains remarkably wearable even for slimmer arms.
The choice of white is intentional. Depending on the viewing angle, the layered composite reveals subtle silver-gray striations beneath its surface, mimicking the organic complexity of the cosmos against a stark black dial opening. A DLC-treated Grade 5 titanium caseback protects the mechanical heart underneath while offering a water resistance rating of 50 meters.
Tracking Photons Across the Solar System
At the center of the display sits a domed, openworked black structure that maps out a miniature solar system. Instead of tracking terrestrial distances, a small blue and green hand attached to one of the carousel arms completes a full turn in three hours, marking the exact duration required for sunlight to reach each of the eight planets. Mercury’s light arrives after 3.2 minutes, Earth appears at 8.3 minutes, Mars sits at roughly 12.6 minutes, and Neptune lies more than four hours away.

Time itself is indicated via three rotating satellite cubes bearing hour numerals. Each satellite travels across a 60-minute, 120-degree arched track before handing off the hour to its successor, paired with a red arrow-tipped minutes hand. It is, by all practical metrics, a complication with no terrestrial utility. Yet it transforms fundamental astrophysics into a kinetic, mechanical narrative.
Calibre UR 12.02 and Industrial Finishing
Powering this planetary display is the self-winding Calibre UR 12.02, developed in partnership with Vaucher. The movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and utilizes twin barrels to deliver a 48-hour power reserve. To mitigate wear on the automatic winding system, Urwerk fits a black PVD-treated aluminum rotor with its signature Windfänger turbine regulator, an air-resistance mechanism that limits high-speed rotor spins.
The watch ships fitted to either a black or white rubber strap secured by a folding clasp.
Pricing and Availability in the Luxury Market
Exclusivity remains a defining trait of the platform. While prior metallic and carbon editions have commanded secondary market attention and occasional sell-out status, the white ceramic iteration pushes the collection further into material innovation.
