In February 2022, the bear “lost its fear of people” and was unable to be deterred by police paintballs, bean bags, sirens and stun guns. DNA evidence confirmed that Hank, the female bear, was responsible for breaking into at least 21 different homes and other “extensive property damage,” according to California Fish and Wildlife. The department said in a statement.
California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife reported Friday that most of the damage caused by captured bears occurred during the winter, a consequence of the climate crisis and the region’s low food availability, which has kept bears from hibernating.
