Father and son (9) missing in the Rhine

Duisburg (NRW) – The search had to be stopped: a father and his son (9) apparently drowned in the Rhine near Duisburg on Tuesday evening.

► The drama began at 6:50 p.m. – witnesses had informed the police that two people were missing in the Rhine stream at the Nato ramp in the Baerl district. A large-scale operation began immediately, involving a fireboat and a jet ski unit as well as the DLRG and a police helicopter.

The nine-year-old’s mother (33) also witnessed the drama and had to be looked after by an emergency pastor. The age of the missing father is still unknown.

57 rescuers searched for the man and child until nightfall. “The search has so far been unsuccessful,” said a spokesman for the fire department in the evening. How the accident happened is still unknown.

The fire brigade was also on duty in Bonn on Tuesday afternoon to rescue a man in distress from the Rhine. The “visibly exhausted swimmer” was pulled into a boat at a bridge and taken to the hospital.

The fire brigade urgently warns “even with the currently very low water levels before swimming or cooling off in the Rhine – there is a risk of death!”
