Russia – Some people seek to whiten their teeth using different methods and means, although some of them do not give the desired result and can cause harm to health.
In an interview with Gazeta.Ru, dentist Elena Khelo points out that among these methods are special tooth whitening pastes.
She says: “On the one hand, these pastes are safe, because they have been subjected to clinical tests, but on the other hand, they are intended for use for a limited period. That is, it can be used for a week or two maximum. “So if a person uses them regularly for a long period of time (a month or more), it can cause irreparable damage to the hard tissues of the teeth.”
According to her, common methods of teeth whitening using lemon and citric acid with salt or soda to scrub tooth enamel also cause great harm.
“Not everyone takes into consideration that this can lead to increased tooth sensitivity, enamel damage and uneven whitening,” she says. “It is then difficult to regain sensitivity after these procedures.”
In addition, the use of hydrogen peroxide for teeth whitening in home conditions is dangerous for the health of the oral cavity, and may cause burns of the mucous membrane and increased sensitivity.
She says: “Using activated carbon is a backward and dangerous way to whiten teeth, because it damages the tooth enamel and the mucous membrane as well.”
She points out that some other popular methods used in teeth whitening can cause thinning of enamel, bleeding gums, allergic rashes, and irritation of the mucous membrane in the oral cavity.
