Harrisburg Softball Dominates O’Gorman With 7-Run First Inning

HARRISBURG, S.D. — The Harrisburg softball team erupted for seven runs in the first inning during Thursday’s game against O’Gorman at Sherman Park, setting an early tone in what became a decisive victory. The offensive surge came through timely hitting and disciplined at-bats, with multiple players contributing to the rally.

According to Dakota News Now, Harrisburg plated all seven runs before recording an out in the bottom of the first, capitalizing on walks, hits and aggressive base running. The inning began with a leadoff walk and quickly escalated as the Tigers worked the count and found gaps in O’Gorman’s defense.

Harrisburg’s offensive outburst was highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles and a two-run double that cleared the bases. By the time the inning ended, Harrisburg had sent nine batters to the plate and built a lead they would not relinquish.

The performance marked one of the most productive opening innings for Harrisburg this season, reflecting improved consistency at the top of their lineup. Players from the No. 2 through No. 5 spots in the order each recorded at least one hit or walk during the frame.

Defensively, Harrisburg held O’Gorman scoreless in the top of the first, with starting pitcher striking out the side looking after working out of a jam in the inning. The early strikeout helped settle the defense following the offensive explosion.

O’Gorman struggled to generate offense throughout the game, managing only three hits and failing to advance a runner past second base after the third inning. Harrisburg’s pitching staff combined for a complete-game effort, allowing just two earned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out six.

The win improved Harrisburg’s record to 8-3 on the season and strengthened their position in the Eastern South Dakota conference standings. Head coach Lisa Mertens praised her team’s approach, noting their ability to execute small-ball tactics while as well taking advantage of extra-base opportunities.

“We’ve been working on being patient and putting the ball in play,” Mertens said in a postgame interview. “When you obtain that many guys on base and keep the pressure on, good things happen.”

Sherman Park, located in northwest Sioux Falls, has served as Harrisburg’s home field for several seasons and continues to host key conference matchups. The facility features a natural grass surface, covered dugouts, and lighting for evening games.

Harrisburg will return to action on Saturday when they host Roosevelt at Sherman Park in a doubleheader beginning at 10 a.m. CT. The team aims to carry forward the momentum from their offensive showing against O’Gorman.
