Harvey Barnes has signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle United ahead of the upcoming campaign, securing his stay at St. James’ Park after entering the final two years of his previous deal. The 28-year-old winger originally moved to Tyneside from Leicester in 2023 in a £38 million transfer. Although his early months with the club were disrupted by injuries, Barnes rebounded to establish himself as a reliable attacking outlet under manager Eddie Howe.
Barnes had been linked with a move to Aston Villa, who are looking for new forwards after selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea. Barnes has opted against following suit, choosing to bet on the club’s project by signing his new contract.
Reflecting on his decision to extend his stay, the England international expressed deep affection for his surroundings.
Barnes said that it felt great to sign the new contract so early before the new season started, noting that it had been an amazing journey so far and that he was delighted to continue that.
Barnes added that when he first joined the club he quickly learned what a special place it was, but after three years there he knew that even more. Barnes stated that he loves everything about it – the city, the stadium, the people – and that he is really happy extending his time here.
Squad Overhaul and Sustained Output Under Eddie Howe
The contract extension provides crucial stability for Newcastle United during an extensive summer revamp. Eddie Howe’s side have spent the last two summers effectively selling their biggest names, with Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Sandro Tonali all gone. Barnes’s decision is a major boost for Newcastle after Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali’s switch to Tottenham earlier in the close-season. Captain Bruno Guimaraes is also said to be on his way out of the club, ensuring that the core of the team has been disbanded, while Newcastle are also hoping to keep the Brazil midfielder amid Arsenal’s interest.
Rather than following teammates out the door, Barnes chose to back the club’s project. His consistency on the pitch underscores why the retention matters. Across 120 career appearances for the Magpies, Barnes has recorded 30 goals and 13 assists since joining the club. His contributions include six goals in the UEFA Champions League last season and a successful campaign in the 2024-25 season as part of the team that won the EFL Cup.

Eddie Howe was quick to praise the forward’s reliability and contribution over three seasons on Tyneside, noting that the new agreement is a very well deserved reflection of the work he’s put in and the quality he’s shown throughout his three years at Newcastle United.

Howe noted that Harvey has vast experience at the highest level but that they believe there is still more to come. Entering what are traditionally a player’s peak years, Barnes is already in his peak years and will hope to kick on from the 2026-27 season.
