Virtual Pop Star Hatsune Miku’s Movie Debut Overloads With Characters, Requires Homework

LOS ANGELES – Hatsune Miku, the globally recognized virtual idol and synthesized singing software, is making her theatrical movie debut on April 17 with Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing. However, viewers unfamiliar with the franchise’s extensive cast of characters may find themselves overwhelmed.

The movie is based on the popular rhythm game Hatsune Miku: Colorful stage, which focuses on various characters who access pocket dimensions called Sekai (worlds), where they express their emotions through music and collaborate with Miku and othre Vocaloid singers, who are less known. While the movie’s synopsis primarily highlights guitarist Ichika and her band, the film surprisingly includes all 20 characters from the mobile game, divided into five musical groups.

This decision by director Hiroyuki hata can be disorienting for newcomers. the storyline jumps between characters and groups, making it challenging to keep track of relationships and the secrets surrounding the sekai. Despite the distinct character designs, the rapid shifts and limited screen time for each character can lead to confusion.

The plot centers on a version of Hatsune Miku who appears on screens worldwide, attempting to sing an original song for lonely individuals and those who are frustrated. The virtual pop star’s voice is cracking and she manifests as static for everyone except the 20 musicians from the five bands of the Colorful Stage! mobile game.

To fully appreciate the movie, viewers may need to do some homework. Hear’s a brief introduction to the five musical groups:

Leo/need: A rock band composed of four childhood friends. They are often seen in school uniforms, and their Sekai is a classroom. Ichika is Leo/need’s leader and the first to discover the Miku in need.
Wonderlands x Showtime: A troupe of four theatre kids who perform at a theme park. Known for their dramatic flair, they rehearse in a theme-park setting. Their Sekai is a colorful carnival filled with talking stuffed animals. Tenma Tsukasa leads this group.

Vivid Bad Squad: A group of street musicians who gather in a hip café.They are generally shown at the café or in an alleyway. Their Sekai is a café similar to their real-world hangout.
Nightcord at 25:00: This group of faceless internet musicians collaborate online. each member has their own unique talent and interest. Their Sekai is a mysterious, digital space.
