It feels like hay fever: local allergic rhinitis triggers almost identical symptoms. Caution: Those who do not treat them increase the risk of asthma.

Hamm – You had nothing to do with hay fever in your whole life. Suddenly the nose is itchy all year round, the olfactory organ is blocked or an unpleasant urge to cough occurs regularly. Local allergic rhinitis (LAR) has all the symptoms of hay fever. If the allergy remains untreated over a longer period of time, there is a risk of severe disease progression.

Symptoms like hay fever: Local allergic rhinitis is dangerous

Local allergic rhinitis (LAR) is an allergic disease that results from an immune response. It is very similar to the widespread hay fever. Those affected suffer from the following symptoms:

respiratory complaintsrunny nosecoughing sneezingnasal congestionmucus formationitching

Unlike hay fever, the immune response in LAR is limited to the nasal mucosa. This makes it particularly difficult to diagnose. Antibodies, also known as specific immunoglobulins (IgE), can therefore not be detected in a skin prick test or in a blood test. The skin prick test is the most well-known allergy test procedure in which allergen-containing solutions are dripped onto the forearm. Depending on the skin reaction, an allergy can be identified.

Local allergic rhinitis or hay fever? symptoms and diagnosis

The diagnosis of local allergic rhinitis is therefore tricky, but not impossible. If LAR is suspected, a nasal provocation test can be performed. The reason: the specific immunoglobulins (IgE) and pro-inflammatory messenger substances can only be detected in LAR in the nasal secretion.

Possible triggers are brought directly to the nose in order to trigger an allergic reaction. Dust mites are among the most common, especially since they occur year-round. Tree pollen and grasses can also trigger local allergic rhinitis. Our pollen count calendar shows which pollen and grasses are on the move.

One thing is clear: if those affected develop respiratory problems and the above-mentioned symptoms, then going to the doctor is not only recommended, but inevitable. And that too, although almost everyone has home remedies for hay fever in the house. If local allergic rhinitis remains untreated for a long period of time, this can lead to a severe course of the disease. Those affected run the risk of developing allergic asthma.
