Hayden Panettiere ex Brian Hickerson reportedly gave police bag of medication

Actress Hayden Panettiere died at age 36 on August 16 at a Greenville, South Carolina, apartment complex. Police found her unresponsive after a 911 call from her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach, while an autopsy revealed no external signs of trauma.

The Police Response and the Greenville Apartment Scene

Emergency services rushed to a Greenville residence on the morning of August 16 following a 911 call placed by Brian Hickerson and his brother Zach Hickerson, according to a police report released by AP News. The responding officer arrived to find the brothers in the apartment while paramedics performed CPR on an unresponsive woman. The officer noted that the patient did not appear to have any obvious physical reasons to be unresponsive. Despite rescue efforts, emergency workers officially pronounced her dead at 2:31 p.m.

According to Foxnews, Zach Hickerson appeared very emotional while paramedics worked inside the apartment, whereas Brian Hickerson did not become emotional until after the star was declared deceased. Following the pronouncement, Brian Hickerson voluntarily handed responding officers a bag containing prescription medication that she had reportedly been taking, an item that investigators added to the case files as the toxicology review got underway.

Autopsy Findings and the Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet determined an official cause of death. A preliminary autopsy conducted by the local coroner’s office found no signs of physical trauma or external injury, and police confirmed that officers observed no evidence of foul play at the scene.

Investigators executed a search warrant at the residence to secure the environment and gather documentation. Law enforcement officials are awaiting a final toxicology report to determine whether pharmaceuticals or other substances played any role in the sudden passing of the 36-year-old performer, whose death occurred just days before she would have turned 37.

A Tumultuous History and Recent Los Angeles Court Proceedings

The presence of Brian Hickerson at the Greenville apartment brought renewed attention to a relationship marked by high-profile legal battles. The two first met through mutual friends in 2018 after Panettiere’s split from Wladimir Klitschko. Hickerson was subsequently charged with domestic violence in 2019 and arrested again in 2020 on eight felony charges, including corporal injury on a spouse or cohabitant, assault with a deadly weapon, and battery.

In 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts and served a short time in jail, completing a four-year term of probation, anger management, and Alcoholics Anonymous sessions. Just three days before the actress’s death, Hickerson appeared in a Los Angeles court to seek an expungement and reduction of those felony convictions to misdemeanors. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office told Foxnews that the prosecution objected, and a Los Angeles judge denied the defense’s motion.

Memoir Revelations and Public Struggles With Addiction

Panettiere had been remarkably open in public interviews and her May memoir, This Is Me, about her lifelong battles with alcohol addiction, postpartum depression, and the intense pressures of early fame. She wrote extensively about her relationship with Hickerson, explaining her complex motivations for forgiveness and rehabilitation.

“I wanted Brian to be in jail just long enough to scare him, but not long enough where’d he become a worse person. I needed him to admit his wrongs and change because of them, but I didn’t want to traumatize him in an irreversible way.”

Her candid disclosures extended to the heavy toll exacted by child stardom and early television roles in Heroes and Nashville. She addressed common misconceptions regarding her daughter Kaya, whom she shared with Wladimir Klitschko, noting that the child began living with Klitschko full-time in Ukraine at age two while the actor entered rehab in 2015 during her Nashville tenure.

Remembering a Lifelong Performer and Her Legacy

As family, friends, and fans process the sudden loss, tributes have highlighted a career that spanned decades from child actor on soap operas like Guiding Light to prominent television franchises. Wladimir Klitschko shared a statement on Instagram reported by AP News, vowing to keep her memory alive for their now 11-year-old daughter.

“She built an incredible career through immense talent, while also facing the darker sides of a very demanding industry. Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives.”
