Haylou PurFree Lite: bone conduction headphones get comfort and battery right | Analysis / Review

At the end of last August, Haylou presented its new bone conduction headphones. The PurFree Lite (BC04) arrived with the promise of bringing improvements compared to the older model, the PurFree BC01 – already tested by TudoCelular.

Does this new model deliver superior quality? What highlights does he bring to this generation? You can check out all the details of the accessory now, in our full analysis.

Design and construction

The previous graphite color gave way to two options in this new model: one purple and one black, with lime green details. Here we have this last shade, which gives an eye-catching appearance when you see the entire product, but is still discreet when it is placed on the user.

Despite maintaining the style of having an arch to support the head, with curvatures that go around the ears, until reaching the tips positioned on the bone next to the ear entrance, the design of the Lite presents its changes.

The body maintained its construction in titanium alloy, with a matte finish, but now the arch is thinner and has a slightly larger opening than the older model. This makes the accessory more comfortable and lightweight to wear for a long period.

There are two buttons on the right side: one to turn on, activate pairing and increase the volume or skip the track; and another to decrease the volume or rewind the track. Both are positioned next to the USB-C connector, which replaces the magnetic pins as a way of charging. The multifunction button moved from the left tip to the top of the right side, which puts it close to the others.

The tips are no longer as thin, but have gained more rounded contours. This allows for a better fit on the face and, consequently, greater precision in hearing the sound, without making it uncomfortable to hear the sound.

The manufacturer saved on protection and now only has an IP55 certification – lower than the IP67 of the BC01. In any case, it is still capable of resisting moderate dust and water splashes. This combination attracts those who want to practice sports and adventures, while remaining aware of their surroundings, as well as those who want a more hygienic solution that does not harm the eardrums.

In the older model, Haylou sent a pair of ear protectors, for acoustic isolation and better bass perception. In the BC04, the box only comes with the headset, a small cable with one end USB-C and the other USB-A, as well as the user guide.

Connectivity

The Haylou PurFree Lite stands out for supporting Bluetooth 5.2. It only has this type of wireless connection, but it provides great stability and coverage on any compatible device.

Another feature present in it is the technology that allows you to connect to two devices at the same time. Thus, it is possible to instantly switch between the two. We tested the feature and saw that it worked well.

The only difficulty, which we had already encountered since BC01, is that the tool is not enabled at the factory. While pairing is activated, you must press the power and multifunction buttons for three seconds to enable the second device to enter.

Furthermore, the manufacturer still does not provide a management application for its accessories. Although the connection is practical, the lack of an app prevents personalized sound profiles and sound equalization.

Sound and microphone quality

We come to the main part: the audio quality. To provide upgraded technology, the Haylou PurFree Lite is equipped with the Qualcomm QCC3044 chip, which provides HD aptX streaming and CD-level sound.

We felt decent quality in this product. It is logical that bone conduction emission prevents many frequencies from being enhanced, but the sound was quite clear.

The only point we felt is that the bass “vibrates” more the sound output at higher volumes. This means that the speaker tries to force a lower frequency than its amplitude is capable of reaching.

The sound power seemed a little lower than the BC01. The maximum volume is still average, which also helps to not leak sound as much. At least the design changes allow for a better fit to enhance hearing.

When we go to voice calls, Haylou inserted a double set of microphones, with noise cancellation technology, in order to filter out ambient noise and improve calls.

At this point, we noticed that the good quality was maintained in the BC04. The voice is heard cleanly and without external sound, such as a TV on or motorcycles and cars passing on the street.

Battery

And how does PurFree Lite behave on battery? Haylou’s new bone conduction headphones promise 10 hours of battery life out of the box. Does it reach the duration promised by the manufacturer?

Our tests were positive in this regard. The accessory exceeded the time guaranteed by the brand, with volume at half, and managed to play music for a total period of 13 hours, even when connected to two devices simultaneously.

When we go to charging, one of the new features from the BC01 to the BC04, as we already mentioned, was the exchange of the magnetic connector for the USB-C port. This makes it easier to use a common cell phone charger and allows for greater speed in the process.

In our tests, the accessory managed to complete the process in approximately two hours when connected to the socket. It’s longer than the one and a half hours we had in the predecessor, but it’s justified by the slightly larger battery capacity for this generation.

Final considerations

The Haylou PurFree Lite proved to be a good affordable option for bone conduction headphones. It offers a lightweight and comfortable design for use for many hours at a time, as well as the resistance to survive water jets, sweat or even light dust.

Connectivity is very practical and allows pairing with two devices at the same time, for faster switching if necessary. It’s a shame that there still isn’t an app for better product management, such as equalization and sound profiles.

The sound quality is pleasing, although it is still far from perfect. Only the power could be a little higher, but this would result in greater audio leakage to the outside, something that only happens discreetly at the current maximum volume.

In turn, the microphone is one of the positive highlights here, with a very clean and clear voice, as well as the battery life that exceeds the older model – the BC01.

The Haylou PurFree Lite (BC04) was launched for a suggested price of US$59.99 (~R$290), with sales via the brand’s website or the official store on AliExpress. However, there is a promotion this week on this last option, in which a unit costs around R$146. You can access the purchase page in this link.
