Carlos Ghosn strikes back Nissan
Carlos Ghosn, the former CEO of Renault and Nissan, has decided to counterattack. Exiled to Lebanon since his spectacular flight from Japan at the end of 2019, he filed a complaint against Nissan before the Lebanese courts. He claims more than a billion dollars to the company which he led for almost twenty years. His estimated damage would be 588 million, in addition to which he is asking for 500 million in damages.
Carlos Ghosn claims to be the victim of a defamation campaign. He claims that Nissan used the question of his remuneration as a pretext to fabricate the means of getting rid of him as chairman of the board of directors. He accuses Nissan, along with two other companies and 12 people, of defamation, slander and fabrication of material evidence.
A hearing scheduled for September 2023 in Lebanon
The hearing before the Lebanese courts is scheduled for September 18, 2023. Ghosn was arrested in Japan at the end of 2018 and was to be tried there for financial embezzlement, before his flight to Lebanon. He has always denied the charges against him.
This complaint marks a new stage in the Carlos Ghosn affair. She had made headlines around the world since her arrest in Japan in November 2018. The businessman, who has Lebanese, French and Brazilian nationalities, lives in Beirut after an incredible escape from Japan at the end of 2019. He has always claimed his innocence. The former boss denounces a “plot” hatched, according to him, by Nissan with the support of the Japanese government, to bring it down and thus avoid a closer union with Renault.
In addition to this case, Carlos Ghosn is also the subject of several other investigations. He is notably targeted by an Interpol red notice at the request of Tokyo. He is also the subject of a second French arrest warrant as part of an investigation for abuse of corporate assets, breach of trust, organized money laundering and passive corruption. Due to the Interpol red notice, the Lebanese justice system banned him from leaving the country. Lebanon, Ghosn’s country of origin, does not extradite its nationals.
