“He Couldn’t be Saved, Confirmed in the Emergency Room”

Sofie Van Hoof, a 41-year-old from Deurne, suffered a serious foot injury during a walk last November. This was particularly concerning due to her type 1 diabetes, which makes her vulnerable to injury. Unfortunately, her wound became infected and continued to worsen despite medical attention, causing fever, pain, hypertension, and hyperventilation for many weeks.

When she visited the emergency room, they simply bandaged the wound instead of examining it thoroughly. After prescribed home nursing care, the wound eventually became too severe to stand on, and Sofie had to crawl to her living room. The home nurse then sent her back to the emergency room where she was informed that her foot was full of pus and dead flesh.

After a week in the hospital, Sofie was informed that her foot could not be saved and would require amputation. Now her aunt is trying to raise funds to modify her house to allow her to live independently and with dignity. Sofie remains hopeful and plans to learn to walk with a prosthesis during rehabilitation. To support her, donations can be made at https://steunactie.be/actie/steunactie-voor-prothese/-18863.
