You turn on the TV, a new match begins: will the politician stand up to the moderator? Will she stand up to her opponent in her own party? Can it hold its own against political opponents? The audience is excited, watches the “arm wrestling” and inwardly awards points or turns away annoyed: not another argument.
Many people criticize that politics has become a big show fight. The person dominates, themes play a minor role. Experts talk about the “personalization” of politics and not only about it: Reporting and public discussion are also shaped by a few (few) figures – how they talk, how they appear, whether they win or act victorious, in general: how they give themselves.
Can politics only be presented and made tangible in this way: by means of people, their games and matches? What is the reason for “person-centred” politics (reporting): a little interested, apolitical audience that has to be won over by feelings? Little content? Too much content? overwhelmed? Where does the personalization of political debate lead?
Andrea Hauer talks to the political advisor and analyst Peter Plaikner and to you. How are you impressed by the performance of some people in politics? When do you specifically want more factual and substantive discussion?
