Although the 60-year-old was stung by the bee several times, it wasn’t until two days after the terrifying incident that he began to develop a severe reaction.
No one enjoys the idea of being stung by a bee, but it’s nothing to fear unless you’re allergic to their venom.
Most people will experience some pain and itching around the bite site, but some may experience a severe allergic reaction called anaphylaxis, which could be life-threatening.
Neither of these scenarios applied to a 60-year-old Somali man who developed multiple organ failure days after a nasty bee sting.
“Despite the fact that the patient suffered multiple bites and received a significant amount of venom, no immediate anaphylactic reaction occurred,” the team from the Turkey Training and Research Hospital in Somalia Mogadishu wrote in a case report published in Dove Press.
“In contrast, a delayed severe response leading to multiple organ failure occurred within 48 hours of the incident.”
The team said this was the first documented case of multiple organ failure resulting from a giant bee sting in Somalia.
“The case highlights the potential seriousness of bee stings, which, while often considered minor, can lead to serious medical complications,” they added.
The unnamed man from a rural area of Somalia was stung multiple times by a giant bee while harvesting bees, but did not go to hospital until a week after the incident due to limited health care facilities in his area.
