He thought he won $600 in the lottery, but pocketed $1 million

An American in the state of Virginia had quite the surprise when he went to claim the prize for his lottery ticket, Insider reported.

Coming home from work on Tuesday, Jose Flores Velasquez decides to buy a 20X The Money ticket at a grocery store, according to the Virginia Lottery.

He realizes he has won a prize, believing it to be worth $600 USD.

But it was when he arrived at the lottery company’s customer service center that Mr. Flores Velasquez learned that his ticket was worth much more. He won the first prize of $1 million USD.

β€œHe had the option of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $759,878 before tax,” Lottery officials explained.

The lucky winner therefore chose the second option. The grocery store that sold her the ticket also received $10,000 from the Virginia Lottery.

The odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 1,754,400.
