Who in Headache suffers, usually thinks first migraine or tension headaches. The pain can also come from other organs. In Germany, for example, an average of 12.9 patients per week see an ophthalmologist because of headaches, according to an official press statement published by the professional association of ophthalmologists in Germany a few years ago. Calculated for the whole of Germany, there are 2.5 million headache patients per year who actually suffer from eye problems.

Headache from the eye area

In fact, headaches can be caused by various eye-specific diseases, writes the professional association of ophthalmologists. Inflammatory diseases of Eye, eyelid, eye socket or lacrimal apparatus are therefore often perceived as forehead, temple, ear or toothache. So-called asthenopia, a symptom complex of eye strain disorders, can also manifest itself as headaches. Asthenopia occurs with stress, psychological stress, incorrectly corrected visual defects or overtiredness and exhaustion. In addition to headaches, symptoms can include heavy eyelids, general malaise, red, painful or watery eyes, as well as double vision, dizziness and blurred vision.

It becomes dangerous when a sudden increase in intraocular pressure, a so-called glaucoma attack, leads to headaches. According to “Apotheken Umschau”, a glaucoma attack manifests itself as severe headache or eye pain, a “rock-hard” eyeball and visual disturbances – in this case, a doctor must be consulted immediately, there is a risk of acute blindness. In general, if you have a severe, unexplained headache, you should consult a doctor to be on the safe side.

Pain from visual defects

Anyone who has ever tried to read in the semidark with squinted eyes for a long time or had to struggle with glasses of the wrong strength for a long time knows how strained vision can hit your head. The Federal Association of Ophthalmologists also points out that if ametropia is not or not sufficiently corrected, the inner eye muscles can cramp, which can lead to headaches as a result.

Overexertion of the eyes, for example due to long periods of work on the screen with an unsuitable working distance or long periods of close focus, can also cause headaches, as can incorrect lighting – the head and eyes do not like light that is too intense or insufficient when work has to be concentrated.
