More than 1,100 patients who underwent treatment at a dental clinic in the Cherbourg region in western France were invited to undergo tests for hepatitis B, C and HIV, after “serious violations” were detected during a monitoring operation conducted at the site.
The Regional Health Agency in the Normandy region explained on Wednesday that “due to the worrying nature of the situation,” it had suspended the dentist from work “for a maximum period of 5 months.”

During an inspection of the practicing dentist’s office in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, the Normandy Regional Health Agency noted “several serious violations that jeopardize the safety of staff and the quality and safety of care.”
The agency did not specify the nature of these “violations,” but according to the newspaper “Press de la Manche,” the equipment used in the dental clinic during treatment was subject to “failure in sterilization.”

The agency added in a statement: “In application of the precautionary principle and on the basis of an assessment of the risks of transmission,” the Regional Health Agency in Normandy requested that “patients be informed that there is a small risk of transmission of hepatitis B, C, and HIV viruses.”
This procedure applies to “all patients who have visited the clinic since its opening in January 2023,” which is estimated at 1,145 patients.
