“The fire in the building at 277 rue Saint-Jacques in the 5th arrondissement on June 21, 2023 exposed the surrounding buildings to combustion residues and dust. Analyzes have shown the presence of lead in certain areas. »

According to these analyses, carried out by the Central Laboratory of the Prefecture of Police on June 26 and 28, sampling sites revealed a content of “acid-soluble lead” greater than 1,000 µg/m², the limit set by the High Council of public health, two of which exceed 5,000 µg/m².

“Favor the use of a damp mop, rather than a broom…”

Results which led the Regional Health Agency to issue recommendations intended for local residents in the process of reintegrating their homes, and which consist of a few “simple hygiene measures to apply to avoid exposure in their homes”.

Thus, the regional agency recommends to “prefer the use of a damp mop, rather than a broom or a vacuum cleaner” to clean one’s accommodation, to leave on the landing or in the entrance shoes, strollers, scooters.

Particularly vulnerable children

It also recalls the importance of “regular washing of hands/regular washing of children’s hands and faces” as well as frequent washing of children’s toys, and cleaning the balcony if the accommodation has one, and all objects that could be there.

In its recommendations, the ARS particularly targets families with pregnant women and/or children because of a “metabolism more favorable to the absorption of lead than adults”, children are particularly sensitive to lead exposure, which can cause lead poisoning in children under seven and unborn children.
