This Wednesday, December 13, the Normandy Regional Health Agency explained that it had noted “serious failings” following the inspection of a dental practice in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (Manche) “endangering the safety of staff and quality and safety of care.
If the health authorities do not explain the nature of these “failures”, our colleagues at the Manche Press, the equipment which was used by the practitioners in this office would be subject to a “sterilization defect”. “Given the worrying nature of the situation”, the dentist concerned will be subject to a suspension of the right to practice “for a maximum period of 5 months”.
More than 1000 people called for screening
But what worries the Normandy Regional Health Agency even more are the risks run by people who have visited this dental office. Health authorities have called on 1,145 patients to be tested not only for hepatitis B and C but also for HIV. The latter have frequented the dental office since the date of its opening, in January 2023. “A risk of transmission” of the AIDS virus exists in fact “if contaminated instruments are not sterilized or are shared between several people” explains the specialized UNAIDS site.

Last October, nearly 4,700 patients who attended the hospital centers of Tarbes, Lourdes and Bagnères-de-Bigorre between 2006 and 2023 were invited to be tested for hepatitis and HIV. Here again, the health authorities had noted a lack of sterilization on dental equipment.
