Healthy and balanced dish according to Dr. Carlos Jaramillo

A balanced diet is one that has foods from all groups and that responds to the nutritional needs of each person. To learn how to build a healthy plate, Dr. Carlos Jaramillo shares, in this episode of Educating with Science, advice and guides of the correct portions to be consumed for each type of food.

Five tips for a healthy diet

In addition to the recommendations of Dr. Carlos Jaramillo, these are other tips from the Harvard School of Public Health to maintain a balanced diet.

  1. Let half of the plate be vegetables: Vegetables provide many of the vitamins and minerals the body needs for good health. Vegetables are naturally low in calories and the fiber they contain helps to satisfy your appetite and improve your metabolism.
  2. The type of carbohydrate is more important than the amount of carbohydrate: some sources of carbohydrates are healthier than others, as they provide additional fiber and other nutrients. It is better to eat carbohydrates from vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes.
  3. Say goodbye to sugary drinks: to hydrate it is better to resort to water, tea and even coffee. It is necessary to reduce the consumption of dairy products, juices and sugary drinks.
  4. The best proteins are those that have not been processed: This means that eating 100 grams of chicken breast is not the same as eating 100 grams of sausages, since the latter has gone through a process in which preservatives and other additives are added that, in high quantities, are harmful to health.
  5. Variety is the key to enjoy: These recommendations do not mean that you have to eat the same foods every day, in fact it is a guide that gives space to be creative with different ingredients and to innovate with combinations every day.
