Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy pre-monsoon rains to continue in Kerala today and tomorrow. The monsoon is expected to continue for five days. Road alerts have been declared in five districts tomorrow. Seven houses in the state were destroyed when a tree fell due to wind and rain today. Many places in Central Kerala were flooded. Meanwhile, the rains eased a bit on Sunday evening. The easing is due to the weak current of the westerly winds in the Arabian Sea. No red alert issued for evening rain A road alert has been issued in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Kannur districts and an orange alert in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Malappuram, Wayanad and Kasaragod districts tomorrow.
Thiruvananthapuram: Three persons who went missing after fishing from Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram have been found in Thengapatnam in Tamil Nadu. The wall of a private hotel in Pothencode collapsed and damaged the house. Some houses in Chaitanya Gardens were flooded in Pattom Muttada. In Kollam, Alappuzha and Kozhikode districts, seven houses were destroyed by falling trees.
In Ernakulam, Aluva, Perumbavoor, Kalamassery and Kochi city were affected by the rains. Ernakulam KSRTC stand submerged in water. Udayanagar Colony and Karaikkamuri were also flooded.
Thankappan Road in Changampuzha Nagar, Kalamassery was completely submerged, 30 houses were flooded and three families were evacuated. Twenty shops in Aluva were flooded. In Perumbavoor, heavy rains caused huge trees to fall and obstructed traffic on MC Road.
Vigilance has been issued for dams in the state following heavy rains. The second and third shutters of the Thiruvananthapuram Aruvikkara Dam have been raised by 20 cm each. In addition to the state control room, it will be opened on district and taluk basis in the wake of the rain warning.
A special control room will be set up under the leadership of the Local Self Government Department. Overnight trips and landings should be avoided. Tourists should avoid night trips and stay in maximum accommodation. As part of precautionary measures, a 100-member team of the National Disaster Management Force left Arakkonam for Kerala. They will be deployed in five districts.
According to private meteorologist Skymet, Kerala has received 73 per cent more rainfall than usual these days. Isolated showers are likely in various parts of the state till May 21. Skymet also predicts monsoon rains in Kerala by May 26. According to the Skymet report, the rains will continue in Kerala till June 10.
