In an interview with The Times US published Saturday (November 25), the Enola Holmes star lamented that ‘cancel culture’ has affected her children’s godfather, Johnny Depp.

“I hate the cancel culture. It’s become hysterical and there’s a kind of witch hunt and a lack of understanding. That’s the problem with these things: people are going to jump on the bandwagon because it’s the trend and to be the headliner of it,” she said.

The actress used the libel lawsuit between Johnny Depp and ex-wife Amber Heard earlier this year as an example, accusing Amber Heard of riding the ‘pendulum’ as the ‘pendulum of #MeToo (is) to go back”.

Despite the rhetoric surrounding the six-week trial, Helena Bonham Carter has explained that she believes Johnny Depp was “completely cleared” by the court’s decision – which awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million dollars in damages.

“I think he’s fine now, summed up the actress. Totally fine.”

She spoke about the backlash JK Rowling has received since posting an essay containing transphobic comments. “That’s horrible, a bunch of assholes. I think she was harassed, added Helena Bonham Carter. It was pushed to the extreme, the judgment of people.

Helena Bonham Carter starred as Bellatrix Lestrange in the film adaptations of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter book series.
