Helena Deland: “I want to make more direct music”

You often refer to the poem “Clamming” by Mary Oliver. Beyond music, do literature and poetry help you to ask your thoughts and find the resources to evolve?

Totally. For example with poetry, it’s also an exercise in creating a world in a template, in a context. We talk about something for free. I think the song does that too. And music in general is the cousin of poetry in that there is a world that is created in this rather brief and evocative form. Then honestly, that poem creates a picture that I hope finds its way into my songs too. I think that’s kind of the baggage of the song. It helps me a lot to read, it’s completely different as a creative exercise. But it still depends on the words. In the same way, listening to music also inspires me a lot. Maybe even a little more directly.
