A shelter that collects mistreated horses in Marcinelle is a victim of bad weather. The ground on which the horses are located is transformed into a muddy pond. The association calls for help. Its managers contacted us via the orange alert us button.
The ground is completely soaked. Volunteers and horses wade and slide through the mud. “Here, it rains a lot, so it’s swampy, it’s muddy. They can fall and hurt their feet and also catch diseases in their hoofs, so it’s really not ideal”, explains Nathalie Bar, volunteer. “We are very afraid for their feet which are rotting underneath because they are always swimming in water”, adds Dolorès Gomez, treasurer of the non-profit organization Save Animals Sauvetages.
Seeing them every day in this mud, it’s painful
The association is currently caring for six horses that were abused or neglected by their former owners. There is no question of supporting other equines in this space for the moment. “It’s really not our perspective. We fight every day for the animal cause and to have that ourselves at the moment, it’s really not great to know. Seeing them every day in this mud, it’s hard”, says Dolores. “We give it all our heart and energy, but we need help”asks Natalie.
For several months, the land has been loaned by the Walloon region to the association, which is responsible for maintaining it. But, for lack of arms and resources, the space is not sufficiently arranged.
The association in search of several things
The refuge is looking for a company that would agree to drain the plot for free. “We are also looking for a company that would agree to offer us rubber tiles. We put it on the ground and we put the straw afterwards, so that the horses are not in the water. There is no mud , everything and dry. We also need someone to come and install gutters for the two boxes”, enumerates
In an emergency, the association would also like to be able to have an infrastructure that could accommodate the horses in complete safety, during the work.
