Herbert Grönemeyer on late fatherhood: “One is just as naive as before”

“People are just as naïve and happy as they used to be. The joy of my children is unabated, no matter what age they are,” said Grönemeyer on Sunday in Ö3’s “Frühstück bei mir”. It was “wonderful the way it is,” said the artist about his late fatherhood. How long he can still accompany his youngest of three children is definitely an issue: “The general question is: how long will I be able to walk this path? I’ve experienced how limited life can be, so I’m making myself no illusions about that. I’m someone who fights for the day I live in. I don’t think much further than that.” His first wife Anna died in 1998 as a result of breast cancer.

In any case, he is not particularly strict with his children. He sees himself as a “playful fellow”. “The best moment with my child is when I look at it and realize what an incredible person is developing.” The relationship with his much younger, second wife Josefine Cox did not change with the birth of the child. “It’s important that you can do everyday life. And everyday life is often tough. That’s part of the deal, you have to go through with it. But I don’t have a gang of housekeepers or employees. We live everyday life like thousands of other families, but of course in one socially more comfortable situation.”
