“Herbs and Spices: the Natural Way to Repel Mosquitoes and Prevent Disease”

With the advent of summer and high temperatures, mosquitoes spread, and their annoying bites multiply, capable of transmitting diseases from one person to another.

However, protection from those bites is now possible, according to a recent study that found that eating herbs and spices could be the key to preventing mosquitoes from being bitten.

Experts from Johns Hopkins University carried out a complex experiment in an ice-skating rink-sized test yard in Zambia to find out which people are most attractive to mosquitoes, according to a report published by the British Telegraph newspaper.

In one experiment, the team asked six people to sleep in individual tents containing a tube that injected the nocturnal scent into a controlled mosquito trap.

The solution is in eucalyptol

They found that mosquitoes were consistently attracted to the scents of people emitting carboxylic acids possibly produced by skin microbes, but the mosquitoes were repelled by someone with elevated levels of eucalyptol.

Eucalyptol, an aromatic component of many plants and herbs, such as geranium, sweet basil, rosemary, sage, and cardamom, is a common ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwash.

Less attractive to mosquitoes

In turn, Dr. Connor McMeneman, assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Malaria Research, said the study points to the idea that high levels of eucalyptol in body odor may make you less attractive to mosquitoes.

Experts believe that, in addition to producing a strong scent, eucalyptol may also act as a deodorizing agent that neutralizes or masks other chemicals that attract mosquitoes, such as carboxylic acids.
