Here are the changes to MacBooks Pro with M2 Pro/Max and M3 Pro/Max chips

2023-10-31 23:05:00

With the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Proequipped with chips M3 Pro e M3 Maxthe previous models, powered by the M2 Pro and M2 Max, have been discontinued.

Some may then wonder what really changed from one version to another, as recent changes have occurred more internally than externally.

Let’s check out exactly everything that has changed below — focusing on the models equipped with the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips in relation to their direct predecessors.

Processors and storage

The biggest difference between the two generations of MacBooks Pro is, without a shadow of a doubt, the SoCSystem on a chipor system on a chip.”>1. Like previous models, both the 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro come in configurations that can use both types of chips (Pro/Max).

The changes begin when we talk about the construction of the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips, which are the first in the industry manufactured using the 3 nanometers. This allows Apple to cram even more resources into the processor for even better performance.

In this sense, the GPUGraphics processing unitor graphics processing unit.”>2 now includes additional features (not available on M2 Pro and M2 Max chips). Among them, the Dynamic Caching allows the GPU to use local memory so that only the exact amount needed for each task is used — significantly increasing its performance.

Other technologies include mesh shading hardware accelerated, which enables the reproduction of more complex content, and ray tracing hardware accelerated, which allows games to render content/colors more realistically.

Additionally, a new media engine now supports AV1 decoding for a more efficient, high-quality video experience on streaming services.

In addition to the new integrated features, the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips differ from their predecessors in CPU core count.Central processing unitor central processing unit.”>3GPU, integrated memory and transistors as follows:

In terms of storage, both models equipped with M2 and M3 family chips come and can be configured with 512GB, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB or 8TB options. However, it is worth noting that, in the M3 family, only the M3 Max supports 8TB of storage. ????????‍♂️

Design, cores e display

Apple has not presented any changes to the general design of its high-end laptops since the arrival of models equipped with M1 Pro and M1 Max in 2021. In other words, the new machines do not feature a new body or anything like that.

With the new models, however, Apple brought a new color: space-black, which is available in both the 14″ and 16″ models. The new color was launched (along with the silverwhich was maintained) replacing the space gray of previous models.

As for the display, the models have screens Liquid Retina XDR 14.2″ and 16.2″ backlit by Mini-LED and with True Tone support, wide color tone (P3) and ProMotion technology (adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz) — just like previous versions. The number of pixels was also maintained in all models: there are 3024×1964 pixels in the 14″ (254 pixels per inch) and 3456×2234 pixels in the 16″ (also 254ppp).

However, we have one change: the new models feature 20% brighter screens for standard content, according to Apple. More precisely, all the latest models provide up to 600 nits of brightness for SDR contentStandard dynamic rangeor standard dynamic range.”>4, which represents an increase compared to the 500 nits maximum of previous models. For HDR contentHigh dynamic rangeor large dynamic range.”>5all models can reach 1,000 nits of maximum brightness with a peak of up to 1,600 nits, numbers that remain unchanged.

Dimensions

As the design between the different generations of 14″ and 16″ MacBooks Pro was maintained, many of the dimensions are the same — except the weight, due to the internal changes promoted by the different chips.

Camera and audio

The camera and audio aspects are others that have not changed. In the case of the first, all new models have a camera FaceTime HD de 1080p with advanced image processor with computational video — just like previous versions.

In terms of audio, we have a sound system with six high-fidelity speakers and woofers with force cancellation, wide stereo sound compatible with Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking on all models — old and new.

Connectivity, ports and battery

The connectivity of the different models has also not changed: just like MacBooks Pro with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, laptops with M3 Pro and M3 Max support Wi‑Fi 6E (802.11ax) e Bluetooth 5.3.

As for the number and type of ports, all models also offer the same options: three Thunderbolt 4 (USB‑C) ports, one HDMI and an SDXC card slot.

Unchanged, the batteries of the new models also offer the same duration as those in previous versions. Are they:

Price

Prices, on the other hand, underwent changes — positively. ????????

In this sense, while the previous 14″ MacBook Pro entry model cost R$24 milthe new entry model is available for R$23 mil. Similarly, the previous entry-level 16″ MacBook Pro was available from R$30 milwhile the new entry model can be purchased for R$29 mil.

The complete price list for the new models can be found in this article.

Anyone out there thinking about purchasing the new models or would you prefer to get some promotion on previous versions at resellers that still have stock of these machines?
