Hermann Maier: “In the end, I almost had to win it”

At the slalom night race in Flachau a few weeks ago, Maier was once again a brilliant host. But the Salzburger was also in a good mood on Monday evening in the ServusTV program “Sport and Talk from Hangar-7”. The best sayings of the ski pensioner:

“It was my first World Championships, but in the end I won ten of the last eleven Super-Gs and was second once. In the end, I almost had to win that one. And that’s the difficult thing.” Hermann Maier about the pressure at his first World Cup Super-G.

“When you drive down a downhill slope at over 100 km/h, you can break out a little every now and then. I’ve never missed out on celebrating.” Hermann Maier admits that he often let it rip.

“I always had problems getting to the start on time and eight (start number, note) was always so that the first two or three were already gone. Then you might have received one or two pieces of information, Because back then there were telephones, not like today. There were televisions, but not at the start. You didn’t have the opportunity to watch anything at the start. From that point of view, eight was always quite good. You have a relatively good one “You’ve had the slopes and a little bit of time so that you can get information and be at the start on time.” Hermann Maier about his lucky number eight.

“It was my first World Championships, but in the end I won ten of the last eleven Super-Gs and was second once. In the end, I almost had to win that one. And that’s the difficult thing.” Hermann Maier about the pressure at his first World Cup Super-G.

“When the black air was there, he became very active and of course we went along with it.” Hans Knauß about the celebrating Hermann Maier.

He only has good words to say about the current men’s dominator Marco Odermatt: “He’s really very dominant. It’s impressive what a series he has achieved in giant slalom. He’s a super phenomenon for the World Cup.”
