According to the renowned New York newspaper, in the novel Díaz “discovers the secrets of an American fortune at the beginning of the 20th centurydetailing the breakneck rise of a New York financier and the enigmatic talents of his wife.”

“Which version of events can we trust? Díaz’s focus on the stories behind the stories seeks the dark mechanisms behind capitalism, as well as the uncredited figures behind the so-called Great Men of history. It is a stimulating search”, maintains the review published in a list in which journalists choose the ten books that marked the year.

“The plot of the novel revolves around power and money, the political side is essential. But, on the other hand, it also seems important to me that everyone who works on the series have the latitude and freedom to find their own tone and its own aesthetics”, said Díaz, regarding the turn that the audiovisual production of the novel can take.

“Although I am a novelist, cinema has always been a great influence. And it’s a great privilege to be able to work alongside such immensely talented people. Kate Winslet, in particular, strikes me as an absolute genius. All the ideas he has shared so far are totally brilliant,” he said, referring to the actress who will take his text to the big screen.

Díaz was born in Buenos Aires in 1973, spent his childhood in Sweden and now lives in the United States, where he teaches at Columbia University. He writes in English, published an academic book on Borges and his only fiction translated into Spanish is “A lo lejas” (Impedimenta), which won him several awards, such as the Saroyan International Prize, the Cabell Award, the Prix Page America, the New American Voices Award, and was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award for Best Fiction.
