Wilson, un six year old belgian shepherdtrained for search, rescue and detection of explosives, is one of the heroes who was part of Operation Hope, which miraculously culminated in the rescue of 4 minors who had been lost in the jungle for 40 days, after a plane crash. Unfortunately, after having fulfilled the mission of recovering the children safe and sound, the canine still can’t get back from the wild territory where he carried out his last mission.

The army reported through its social networks about the loss of the animal, which occurred during the searches carried out by the Special Forces, through the Combined Search Cellsin the difficult terrain of the Yarí jungle in Guaviare.

Wilson was part, together with Ulises, of one of the canine pairings used in the researchhad been supplied with a Cessna C-206 aircraft pilot’s cap and was leading the advance in the middle of muddy terrain, thick with tall and leafy trees, a natural habitat for predators and poisonous plants.

It was hoped that the dog had arrived with the minorssince the rescuers had found their footprints very close to each other, but finally, after the successful extraction of the children, it was ruled out that Wilson had also been found.

The hypothesis of the FFMM is that the animal could have become disoriented “due to the terrain, humidity and adverse weather conditions”.

In addition to the celebrations for the rescue of the 4 indigenous children, social networks were flooded with heartfelt messages from users requesting that Wilson is not left behind after completing his important mission in the jungle.

In response to this call, the Commander of the Military Forces, Major General Helder Giraldo, reported on Saturday morning that the search for the dog continues as part of the same Operation Hope.

“Our premise as commands: A fallen comrade is never abandoned on the battlefield. #OperaciónEsperanza advances in the search for our canine Wilson, who, while tracking and in his eagerness to find the children, distances himself from the troops and gets lost”, declared the commander.

The rescued children are already in Bogotá, where they will be treated for their speedy recovery and happy return to their families. In the meantime, news is awaited Wilson, one of the canine heroes who made possible the feat that today moves millions of people all over the world.

During the press conference of the Minister of National Defense, Iván Velásquez, for the arrival of the children in Bogotá on Saturday, Astrid Cáceres, director of the ICBF, confirmed that rescued children claimed to have been with the dog Wilson. “The puppy got lost, they don’t know where he was, but he was with them for a while,” said Cáceres.
