This Friday, Marie-Claude and Antonio returned to the scene for the first time since the fire, which broke out on the first floor of their home.
“My wife was sleeping at the time. She was not well and was resting in her bedroom.”says Antonio. “I went to pick up the kid from school. When I got there, I received a call from the neighbor telling me to come back straight away because there were flames coming out of the apartment. “
The flames ravaged the living room and the entrance hall. The sixty-year-old was trapped in her apartment. She called for help to her window. On the sidewalk opposite, Gérardo witnessed the scene and tried to help him. “I tried to rescue her with a ladder, but there was an explosion. There were pieces of glass everywhere. It was becoming complicated with the means we had”he describes.
As a result of chance, at the same time, two firefighters destroyed a wasp nest in a neighboring street. A radio call tells them of a fire. Salvatore and his colleague went there. “We saw an elderly lady screaming for help with her head sticking out of her bedroom window. My colleague told me, ‘Look, we have a ladder, and we’re going to do the best we can while waiting for our colleagues and their suitable trucks “says the firefighter.
Salvatore managed to evacuate Marie-Claude before the fire crew arrived. “She wouldn’t be here anymore. Ten minutes more, and she was gone,” said Antonio.
Their home was completely destroyed and their little dog Mirza could not be saved.
