Two brands of ham are in the first two places of the most consumed brands in France.

CONSUMPTION – Herta remains the most purchased brand by the French. The ham brand recorded 252 million purchases in 2022, which places it at the top of the annual ranking of the best-selling brands in France, as in 2021, according to the latest ranking established by Kantar Worldpanel and reported by BFMTV this Friday, April 7.

In second position, there is also a ham brand: Fleury Michon, with 211 million purchases. The President brand, with its cheeses and butter, completes the podium with 201 million purchases.

In the rest of the top 10, we find in order Coca-Cola, Cristalline, Panzani, Harry’s, Pasquier, Bonduelle and La Laitière.

Among the brands that have plummeted in this ranking, we find in particular Kinder, which lost 12% of purchases, weighed down by the recall of hundreds of tonnes of products manufactured in a Belgian Ferrero factory after the report of dozens of case of salmonellosis.

Andros in trouble

The fall is even more brutal for the Andros group, BFMTV tip. The compote brand is down 18% in 2022, dropping from 14th to 20th place. Owned by the same group, the Bonne Maman jam brand is down 8%.

The good financial health of the Herta and Fleury Michon ham brands, at the very top of this ranking, comes as the government asked manufacturers at the end of March to quickly lower the doses of nitrites in charcuterie.

Its action plan includes “immediate reductions in nitro additives” by around 20% by the end of April for mass-consumption charcuterie products, in particular cooked hams, bacon bits, rillettes or dried sausages.

The health agency Anses confirmed in July the link between cancer risk and exposure to nitrate additives, leading the government to work on this plan which was to be presented last fall.
