High Diving Show Disaster: Acrobats Injured and Pool Breaks at Theme Park

Five performers and two visitors were involved in the incident. Three acrobats were taken to hospital, a police spokesman said Monday evening. A park spokesperson said a pool broke and towers gave way.

“A mobile pool in the high diving show, called ‘Retorno dos Piratas’ (Return of the Pirates in Portuguese), broke during a performance,” he said.

Platforms up to 25 meters high are mounted on the pool. This is where the acrobats jump from. The scaffolding collapsed due to lack of stability following the water leaked. Some elements would have fallen on the roller coaster of the Atlantica SuperSplash attraction.

Last June, a big fire broke out in a technical room of a Europapark attraction. A large deployment of firefighters was needed to bring the blaze under control. Seven men were slightly injured.
