In Germany, around 3,100 people died due to the heat in 2023.

Every second person who died from the heat was more than 85 years old.

In absolute terms, more women than men have died as a result of high temperatures.

According to estimates by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), there were around 3,100 people in Germany last summer as a result of heat died. “The size should no longer change,” said a spokeswoman for the RKI to the Düsseldorf “Rheinische Post” (Saturday). Accordingly, there was more than every second heat death at least 85 years old this summer.

Overall, in absolute terms, more women than men would die as a result of high temperatures, according to the RKI. The reason for this, however, is the high proportion of women among older people. In 2022, the RKI recorded 4,500 deaths related to heat.

Next week, the institute will publish its final weekly report on heat-related mortality, the spokeswoman said. There will then probably be a summary balance sheet for the summer of 2023 in the fall.

Heat protection plan presented

The German Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) presented a heat protection plan at the end of July and set the goal of keeping the number of heat deaths below 4,000 this year. The plan includes, among other things, greater awareness of the dangers of heat, information on protective measures and warnings in extreme heat.

According to Lauterbach’s wishes, posters from the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) with tips on how to behave in hot weather should be displayed in as many doctor’s offices and care facilities as possible in the future.
