High Number of West Nile Virus Cases in Colorado – 2023 Data and Trends

According to department of public health and information In Colorado, 621 people were infected with West Nile virus (WNV) this year, of whom 310 (50%) had a neuroinvasive form of the infection, 376 (60.5%) were hospitalized and 48 ( 7.7%) died. This year, Colorado is the state with the highest number of cases of WNV infection (28% of recorded cases by the CDC).

Only the year 2003 with 2,947 cases and 66 deaths surpasses the year 2023. In 2022, the state had reported 206 cases and 20 deaths, and in 2021 11 deaths had been recorded for 175 reported cases. Between 2004 and 2020, the average number of deaths per year in Colorado linked to a case of WNV was only 4.7, with the highest number of deaths occurring in 2006, 2013, 2016 and 2019, years during which 8 people died.

The period October 2022 to the end of September 2023 was exceptionally wet, undoubtedly creating more extensive breeding sites for WNV vector mosquitoes (Culex). Colorado’s November frost marks the end of the state’s WNV transmission season for 2023
