With the popularity of Generative AI programs such as ChatGPT, knowing how to communicate with AI may become the most useful skill. You can become a “Prompt engineer” without a programming degree, and the monthly salary can be as high as US$375,000 (about HK$240,000).
Anthropic, an AI security and research company, is hiring a “Prompt engineer and librarian” with a salary range of $280,000 to $375,000. The main task of this position is to build a high-quality hint library or hint chain to help customers complete various tasks, and to build and improve tutorials and tools. Applicants only need to have basic programming skills and familiarity with large-scale language models.
While this type of hiring is novel, it is not unique. Sam Altman, CEO of ChatGPT development company OpenAI, once mentioned instruction engineers on Twitter, emphasizing the importance of creating excellent instructions.
The following is a deconstruction of the emerging and high-paying “dream job” of command engineer.
The main work content of an instruction engineer is actually similar to that of a UI engineer. Engineers must understand how large-scale language models (such as ChatGPT) work, identify AI responses, and ensure that these AI tools can output clear and meaningful answers for users. Command Engineers play a cross-cutting role and have the following three main components:
1. Develop, test and improve AI commands
The core job of an instruction engineer is to work directly with the AI platform to develop new instructions. They will test the answers and responses to different commands entered by the user, and involve continuous training and improvement of the AI model.
2. Work with interdisciplinary teams
As an important member of the development team, the command engineer will cooperate with the developers of the product team and the project business team, and is responsible for consulting and quality control work related to the company’s goals and user needs.
3. Analysis and reporting
The last job of the command engineer is to monitor the input and output of the program, analyze and establish evaluation criteria to measure the performance of the AI platform. This kind of analysis and reporting will benefit developers, data scientists, and business teams, establishing a standard by which AI platforms are measured.
Command Engineer is still a very new and evolving position, with job complexity and functions specific to the company and platform. The highest-paying jobs may require deep AI knowledge and extensive programming capabilities to build thousands of precisely selected command prompts.
