A chase worthy of the greatest action films took place at the French border and ended in Quiévrain a little over a week ago. In his race, the motorist injured a police officer who was trying to avoid the driver’s vehicle. Numerous violations were also noted that day. The steps did not stop there for the police, who were obliged to observe all the damage caused by the driver’s crazy escapade. More than ten days after the events, the Hauts-Pays police zone says more about the progress and consequences of this case.
”We obviously noted all the offenses committed in our area. Fines were then issued for dangerous driving and rebellion in particular. The Boraine police zone, where the run began, also did the same,” confides Patrice Degobert, Chief of Staff of the Hauts-Pays police zone. “As for the damage caused, the driver will be prosecuted in order to cover the cost of this damage. If there is also moral damage, we could become a civil party. However, this will not be the case in this case.”

Concretely, the Hauts-Pays police zone has insurance for all the vehicles in its fleet. The latter obviously covers the cost of the damage caused by the driver. After that, the latter is asked to reimburse the law enforcement insurance while paying the fines received following the numerous violations noted. “As far as the injured police officer is concerned, the steps are the same. Our insurance covers the costs linked to his incapacity to work before claiming them from the offender. The police officer in question can also become a civil party if he wishes,” adds Patrice Degobert.
Collateral damage
In his race, however, the driver did not hit only the police. Several victims who were in its path were in fact forced to observe the damage. “A lot of administrative work was carried out to assess the damage to all the vehicles. Files have been created for all the victims who must now appeal to their insurance to receive compensation. For the rest, the classic enforcement procedure for hit-and-run cases will take its course,” explains Patrice Degobert.
As for the driver, after five days of detention, the police were forced to let him go unless the council decided otherwise. He will now have to be held accountable for his crazy chase.
