Region Braces for Powerful Storm Bringing Heavy Rains and Damaging Winds
A potent storm system is poised to unleash a barrage of heavy rains and powerful winds across the region today, prompting officials to issue two high-level weather alerts. The worst of the weather is expected to arrive this afternoon, posing significant challenges for commuters and residents.
Rain to Batter Region Throughout the Day
Light to moderate rain has already drenched the region this morning, but the intensity is expected to ramp up considerably after lunchtime. Expect periods of steady to heavy rainfall through approximately 1 p.m., with eastern portions of the region enjoying a brief respite between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. before the main front arrives, bringing renewed soaking conditions.
The deluge is likely to cause widespread flooding problems, particularly in areas with poor drainage. Some areas have already received between 0.5 and 1.5 inches of rain, and a further 1 to 3 inches is anticipated across much of the region, with higher totals expected in northern and western locations.
Intense Winds Threaten Power Outages
While the rain is a significant concern, the strongest impacts may come from the exceptionally strong winds accompanying the storm. Peak gusts of 50 to 60 mph or even higher are possible along the south coast and to the east of Interstate 95.
“Scattered outages will be possible,” warns a meteorologist, “so be sure to charge your devices in case you lose power.”
The combination of heavy rain and strong winds could make driving extremely hazardous. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution, slow down, and increase following distances.
