Education affects all of life. What does it take to lead a self-determined, fulfilling existence? Education is part of it.
Knowledge is half the battle: Education is essential for young people to be able to build a self-determined, fulfilling life. If Statistics Austria is to be believed, high-quality education has an impact on human life as a whole – and on life expectancy. Female academics have the highest life expectancy and compulsory school graduates the lowest.
Connections between origin, level of education and life expectancy
New demographic indicators show that the number of years of life remaining increases with higher levels of education. At the age of 35, when most people have completed their formal education, men with a university degree can expect an average age of 84.2 years, while those with compulsory schooling can only expect to be 76.6 years old.
The life expectancy of women with compulsory schooling is 82.7 years, and that of women with university degrees is 86.9 years. From 2015 to 2021, the difference grew from 6.3 to 7.6 years for men and from 3.4 to 4.2 years for women.
In 2022, around 2.35 million people with a migrant background lived in Austria. This means that more than a quarter of the population has its roots abroad. Nevertheless, in Austria, social background still determines educational choice and success more strongly than in the EU. Education can compensate for a lot – this is particularly important in metropolitan areas in schools with a high proportion of children from socioeconomically disadvantaged families. They often start out with limited knowledge of German, receive little help in learning in their environment and lack further prospects. According to Teach For Austria, there is often a lack of teachers and therefore fair opportunities here. Many young people, especially in urban areas, end their education too early.
Committed teachers are the key to good education
Teach For Austria is part of the global Teach For All network and advocates for high-quality education in Upper Austria, Lower Austria and Vienna. Because: Committed teachers are the key to good training. To ensure that children are supported in their individual abilities through education and that all paths are open to them, the network has been putting together a cohort of motivated university graduates every year since 2011. As teachers at middle schools and polytechnic schools or as pedagogical specialists in kindergartens, they open up new perspectives and thus further educational paths to children with more difficult starting conditions.
