Authorities confirmed that Robert E. Crimo was taken into custody near Lake Forest, Illinois.
Robert E. Crimo III, 22, was identified by police as a person of interest in the 4th of July parade mass shooting in Highland Park, Illinois.
Authorities said in a brief news conference that Crimo was identified by a north Chicago police officer, who tried to take him into custody.

Authorities say Crimo is still considered a “person of interest” as they investigate and connect him with certainty to the crime scene.
At least six people were killed and 31 injured in a shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, during an Independence Day parade, according to a city news release.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported that a Mexican died in the shooting, and that two other citizens of Mexican origin were injured.
Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said she is working to help get the Highland Park community whatever resources they need, both in regards to the capture of the suspect that is currently underway and also in the coming weeks and months as the people recover from the tragedy.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker addressed the Highland Park community, saying “there are no words” to describe the loss and grief felt by the families of those killed and injured on this holiday.
“It is devastating that an American celebration has been torn apart by our uniquely American plague,” Pritzker said. “A day dedicated to freedom has exposed the only freedom that, as a nation, we refuse to defend. The freedom of our fellow citizens to live without the daily fear of gun violence.”
Of those injured, 26 people were taken to NorthShore Highland Park Hospital, according to Jim Anthony, a spokesman for NorthShore University Health System.
Five other people were taken to NorthShore Evanston Hospital, which is a level one trauma center.
The five people who lost their lives in the parade were adults, however there is no information on the age of the sixth victim.
“There was one who was transported to a local hospital, who died in the hospital. I don’t have any additional information on that victim,” Banek said.
Sgt. Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force said police recovered a rifle from the scene of the shooting.
Covelli said he couldn’t reveal details about where the gun was found, but said it appeared the shooter was “shooting from a roof,” but he had no information on which roof specifically. Police believe the shooting suspect accessed the roof of a business using an unsecured emergency ladder in an alley.
