“We both turned 40 in 2025,” said Farnham. “We decided, ‘hey, let’s do something amazing, and let’s have an epic journey.’ we found the Great Outdoors Challenge, which is a coast-to-coast hike across Scotland. You start with your toes in the water on one side, you design your own route, and than you head all the way across to the other side.”

Over 15 days, the pair traversed approximately 180 miles, averaging 15 miles per day. The trek served not only as a personal milestone but also as an inspiration for others to prioritize their mental health.

“Hopefully, people can use that as motivation to say, I can get out and walk too, and take care of who I am,” said Farnham.

Overcoming Stigma

Farnham’s own journey to openly discussing his mental health challenges was a long one. He acknowledged the difficulties he faced growing up in a household where such topics were avoided.

“I grew up in a household that we didn’t talk about it,” said Farnham. “We swept it under the rug.”

Through time, support, and connection with others, he gradually broke through the stigma surrounding mental health.

“Breaking through that stigma has been quiet a freeing journey,” Farnham said.

He now views the trail as a safe and comfortable space to engage in conversations about mental health, emphasizing the positive impact of physical activity and shared experiences.

“Walking on a trail, getting those endorphins going, walking side-by-side with someone and having that conversation, is just unbelievably beneficial,” said Farnham.
